Firefighters taken to hospital after Luton Airport fire | UK News

An enormous fire at Luton Airport’s car park has resulted in several firefighters being taken to hospital and the suspension of all flights until 12pm.
The blaze broke out at a newly built multi-storey car park beside the airport’s Terminal 2 building just before 9pm yesterday, after a car burst into flames.
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, which sent more than 15 crews to the incident, confirmed the structure had partially collapsed as a result.
Five people, including four fire service personnel and an airport official, have been taken to Luton and Dunstable hospitals for smoke inhalation.
A fifth firefighter was treated at the scene.
Footage posted on social media showed a fierce fire ripping through the car park, a short distance from the main airport building.
Hundreds of cars are believed to have been destroyed as the blaze spread across a significant portion of the multi-storey.
Russell Taylor, an account director from Kinross in Scotland who saw the flames after arriving from Edinburgh, said: ‘There were a couple of fire engines with a car ablaze on the upper floor of the car park at just after 9pm.
‘A few minutes later most of the upper floor was alight, car alarms were going off with loud explosions from cars going up in flames.
‘The speed in which the fire took hold was incredible.’
In a statement at 3.30am today, Luton Airport said: ‘Emergency services continue to respond to a significant fire in Terminal Car Park 2, which has resulted in a partial structural collapse.
‘All flights are suspended until 12pm on Wednesday, please contact your airline for the latest flight information.
‘Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport at this time, as access remains severaly restricted.’
Bus firm Arriva confirmed this morning it would not be able to serve the airport terminal due to the extent of the damage.
A Bedfordshire Fire Service spokesman said: ‘One half of the structure is fully involved in fire and the building has suffered a significant structural collapse.
‘Fire crews are working to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings and vehicles on air side of the airport.’
