Two young men have been arrested after a ‘stolen’ car bulldozed into a fun fair and struck a woman in Wigan, Manchester.

A silver Ford Focus which failed to stop was being tailed by officers on Saturday evening along Wigan Road in Hindley, three miles east of Wigan town.

The vehicle careened onto Cross Street and then Morris Street before entering the fun fair on the former Market Square, colliding with a woman, 45.

She suffered serious injuries in the car crash at around 8.25pm, Greater Manchester Police said.

‘The occupants of the vehicle did not remain at the scene,’ the force said.

Two young men aged 19 and 12 have been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving.

County authorities said that ‘in line with normal procedure’, it has referred itself to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch and the police watchdog Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

On Facebook, bosses at the fair run twice a year for local children to enjoy said the vehicle smashed through the gate and into the fairground.

A L Silcock Fun Fairs said: ‘The occupants of the car bailed out and ran away leaving the car still running on full lock and in gear.

‘Luckily one of the showmen managed to put the handbrake on and it came to a halt under one of the bungee trampolines.’

‘This happened so quickly we have been so lucky that no one was seriously hurt tonight,’ the organisers said, adding: ‘All of us on the ground tonight are fine, just a little shook up as it’s not something you expect to happen.’

The fair was opened as normal on Sunday, A L Silcock Fun Fairs said in a follow-up post, stressing that it hopes the incident ‘hasn’t put off paying us a visit’.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘A vehicle failed to stop for police officers on Wigan Road, Hindley, at around 8.23pm last night (Saturday October 8).

“The vehicle made off and entered a fun fair.

‘A pedestrian was hit by the offending vehicle and the driver then fled on foot. The pedestrian was taken to hospital for treatment on injuries which are not life-threatening or life-changing.

‘A 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man have since been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving. Both have been bailed pending further enquiries.’
