Man left with serious injuries after dog attack in Sunderland | UK News
A man has been rushed to hospital with serious injures after he was attacked by a dog in Sunderland.
Police were called to an address in Maple Terrace, Shirley Row at around 6.55pm on Tuesday.
The man, aged in his 50s, was badly hurt and taken to hospital following the incident.
Officers killed the dog and a 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
He is currently being held in custody.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: ‘The dog was destroyed at the scene to ensure the safety of the public.
‘A second dog was also seized from the address as a precaution.
‘There is no wider risk to the public, and police remain in the area to offer reassurance to the community.
‘Officers would ask people not to speculate about the incident online, including on social media, while enquiries are ongoing.’
On Monday, a toddler was mauled by a ‘large XL bully’ outside a hotel in London.
It comes just days after protests were staged across the country opposing the ban of the American XL bully breed in the UK announced by Rishi Sunak in September.
Plans to make the breed illegal by the end of the year have split opinion with some saying irresponsible owners are to blame, while others believe XL bullies are too dangerous.
The PM made the announcement off the back of a string of dog attacks by XL bullies, including a shocking incident in Staffordshire on September 14 in which 52-year-old Ian Price was mauled to death while trying to protect his elderly mum.
In the week before the fatal attack on Mr Price, an 11-year-old schoolgirl had been badly injured when an XL bully dog randomly attacked her as she walked through Birmingham, as well as two men who tried to intervene.
