Utah: Four killed when plane crashes shortly after takeoff | US News
Four people have died after their plane crashed moments into its flight over an American nature reserve.
The small aircraft went down shortly after taking off from the Canyonlands Field Airport, just outside the Arches National Park, at around 8.30pm on Sunday, authorities say.
The Grand County Sherriff’s Office said ‘rescue efforts were completed’ after the wreckage was found by a helicopter crew.
It did not clarify whether others survived the crash, but the type of plane involved, a Piper PA-28-140, is only designed to carry up to four people.
Emergency services responded to a call from a witness who saw a ‘plane going into the ground’, the Sherriff’s Office added.
The victims’ identities were not released as their families had not yet all been notified.
Investigators from the US National Transportation Safety Board will now look into the causes of the crash.
The Grand County Sherriff’s Office suggested other occupants were rescued alive but did not state how many.
