met police officer chris kaba murder charge remanded custody | UK News

Mr Kaba died of a single gunshot wound to the head in September last year

A Metropolitan Police officer has appeared in court charged with the murder of Chris Kaba.

The officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court ahead of a further appearance at the Old Bailey on Thursday afternoon.

Mr Kaba, 24, died of a single gunshot wound in Streatham Hill on September 5, 2022.

He was driving his car down Kirkstall Gardens when he was blocked by a marked police vehicle and there was ‘contact’ between the two cars, a court previously heard.

It is believed the Audi he was driving was linked to a firearms incident that had taken place the previous day.

A police marksman then fired a single shot through the windscreen, hitting Mr Kaba in the head.

Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS special crime division, said: ‘Following a thorough review of the evidence provided by the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct), the CPS has authorised a charge of murder against a Metropolitan Police officer following the death of Chris Kaba.’

IOPC director Amanda Rowe said: ‘The officer and Mr Kaba’s family were notified of the decision by the CPS this morning.

‘Our thoughts remain with Mr Kaba’s family and everyone affected by this tragic incident.

‘It’s important now that criminal proceedings are able to run their course.’
