A teenager in Massachusetts was charged with attempted murder after a racist attack at a scenic Cape Cod pond, prosecutors said.

The teenager, identified only as a white 14-year-old male, was indicted by a grand jury on charges of attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon after attacking a black teenager, also 14, while swimming in late July.

The teenage attempted murder was already ‘known to the court,’ Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois said.

The attack took place after three teens – the attacker, the victim, and a third male met to swim at Goose Pond in Chatham, a scenic lake on the east coast of Cape Cod.

According to prosecutors, shortly after arriving at the pond, the attacker picked up a stone, threatened the victim, and shouted a racial slur at him.

The victim had also told the other teens that he could not swim, and wore a life jacket while swimming in the pond.

‘Once in the water, the juvenile defendant proceeded to pull on the victim’s life jacket and submerged him underwater 4 or 5 times, causing the victim breathing duress,’

The third teenager laughed at the attempted drowning, and called the black teenager ‘George Floyd,’ prosecutors said.

The attacker continued the attempted drowning, swimming underneath the black teenager and pulling his feet further down.

The brutal assault was only stopped when an onlooker heard the victim’s cries for help on a nearby beach.

‘A bystander entered the water and intervened, assisting the victim to shore,’ Galibois said.

The attack was investigated by the Chatham Police Department before being reviewed by a grand jury.

On Thursday, a judge in Barnstable Juvenile Court found him to be ‘dangerous’ and ordered him to be held without bail until trial.
