RAF Typhoon jets have intercepted Russian bombers flying near British airspace, the UK government has confirmed.

Pilots chased down Vladimir Putin’s planes as they were spotted just north of Scotland early on Monday.

Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey, said: ‘RAF pilots launched in their Typhoon jets to intercept two Russian long-range bombers this morning.

‘They monitored them as they passed north of the Shetland Islands, ready to counter any potential threat to UK territory.’

Britain said its Typhoon fighter jets intercepted two Russian maritime patrol bomber aircraft in international airspace north of Scotland on Monday, within NATO’s northern air policing area.
