Summer might be ready to make a long-awaited return next weekend, with weather forecasters predicting 30°C heat for some parts of the UK.

But there’s some bad news – the dismal rainy weather that plagued July and early August isn’t going away quietly.

This morning, the Met Office issued a yellow warning for rain covering much of Wales and most of northern England, taking effect at midnight tonight (Sunday, August 13).

People living in those areas are being warned of ‘rain, heavy and persistent at times, bringing the risk of disruption to transport and infrastructure’ – and even possible flooding and power cuts.

It’s reminiscent of the recent heavy rain that battered the UK for weeks earlier in the summer, as the Jet Stream stubbornly sat south of the English Channel.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst explained that things would clear up not long after the yellow warning ends at 9pm tomorrow (Monday, August 14).

‘The good news is that low pressure moves out of the way as we go into Tuesday, so it should be a drier day on Tuesday,’ he said.

‘A better chance of seeing some sunny spells particularly across eastern parts of the UK.’

And this time there may be blazing sunlight at the end of the tunnel.

Parts of southern England could see the benefit of some continental heat, thanks to shifting pressure systems over the come week.

Greg said: ‘An area of low pressure to the west of the UK and the Atlantic slowly starts to move towards us.

‘What that allows to happen is for the winds to turn southerly, and we start to import some higher temperatures from the near continent.

‘So, staying into Friday, we’re likely to see those temperatures rising, potentially getting towards the high 20s and then possibly by Friday and into the weekend, depending on cloud and shower distribution, we could locally see temperatures around 30 degrees by by the weekend.’
