Woman arrested over ‘Russian plot to kill Ukrainian president Zelensky’ | World News

A woman has been arrested over an alleged Russian plot to kill the Ukrainian president, Ukraine’s security service said.

The woman allegedly tried to discover the itinerary ahead of Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Mykolaiv in June, after the region was hit by flooding.

Ukraine’s security service, the SBU, said the woman was caught ‘red handed’ when she was trying to pass intelligence to the Russians and arrested.

The service shared a photograph of two of its officers with the alleged suspect – though all of their faces had been blurred.

Ukraine has previously accused its citizens who support Russia of passing information on to them.

Mr Zelensky said he had been informed about the arrest, calling the arrest part of the ‘fight against traitors’, the BBC reports.

He was visiting Mykolaiv in June to see the damage caused by the Kakhovka dam breach. The SBU said it was made aware of the plot before the visit and put extra security measures in place.

It alleged Russia was planning a ‘massive air strike on the region’ and the suspect was going to provide the Kremlin with the locations of electronic warfare systems and ammunition storage locations.

She’s also alleged to have driven around the area and taken pictures and video of Ukrainian military facilities.

The suspect wasn’t arrested at the time of Mr Zelensky’s visit, and instead she was followed to investigate her actions and ‘assignments received’ from the Russians.

She’s expected to face charges of unauthorised dissemination of information about the movements of weapons and troops.

If found guilty, she could face 12 years in prison.
