The Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will now send reminders to pay road tax by text message or email rather than post.

Instant notifications will now be sent out – after it was feared drivers are simply forgetting to pay the duty.

This tax change means drivers do not have to wait for reminders to come in the post.

The change comes as part of DVLA’s new Driver and vehicles online account service, putting all driver and vehicle information in one place.

In 2021, an estimated £119 million was not paid in road tax.

They also found 55% of vehicles had been unlicensed for two months or less.

The DVLA estimates there are around £719,000 unlicensed vehicles on the road.

When signing up to the service, drivers need to provide their personal details and provide a valid driving license or national insurance number.
