Thailand: At least 10 killed in fireworks warehouse explosion | World News
A massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Thailand has killed at least 10 people and injured hundreds of others.
The devastating blast rocked the Narathiwat province in the south of the country today.
Officials say at least 118 people have been wounded and more than 200 households have been affected.
Around 100 of those homes are said to have been severely damaged or wrecked in the devastating fireball that followed..
It’s also feared that people could still be trapped under the debris waiting to be rescued, Narathiwat province’s public relations department said.
Videos posted on social media show a huge plume of smoke over the area and many damaged structures, cars and motorbikes, as well as streets covered with debris.
Roofs and walls of many nearby houses and other buildings have collapsed in the Sungai Kolol district.
Horrifying images show how structures have been reduced to rubble as rescue workers attempt to deal with the situation.
Saturday’s blast caused damage in a radius of about 500 metres (1,640ft), the local public relations agency reported.
Provincial governor Sanan Pongaksorn told public broadcaster Thai PBS the explosion was likely triggered by construction work taking place in the warehouse.
He said sparks from metal welding causing the fireworks stored inside to catch fire and explode.
