A shocking video captured the moment a naked woman in California opened fire on rush hour commuters on the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

The bizarre incident took place around 4.38pm on Tuesday after California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to a 911 call from a toll plaza on the bridge.

The officers arrived to find a woman had used her own vehicle to block multiple lanes going east towards Oakland.

The woman, who police believe was going through a mental health crisis, then left her car and began firing a handgun ‘into the air and towards passing motorists,’ the CHP said in a news release.

‘CHP personnel located the female, who was nude, standing on the right shoulder,’ the department said. ‘Officers utilized de-escalation techniques and convinced the woman to drop the weapon and surrender.’

Police de-escalate the situation on the San Francisco Bay Bridge

Traffic on the San Francisco Bay Bridge ground to a halt during the shooting and the investigation. All lanes were reopened on the bridge around 5.41pm.

‘Although multiple vehicles were struck by the gunfire, no injuries have been reported,’ the California Highway Patrol said.

The shooter was detained and taken by ambulance to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The shooter has not been identified. She has since been placed on a mental health hold, a public information officer for the CHP confirmed.

The woman will be taken into custody and criminally charged after the hold has concluded.

A video of the incident was captured by a driver, who can be seen ducking for cover as his car approaches the armed woman.

The wild video shows the shooter fire at least two shots – one above her into the air, and another directly into a passing car’s window.

Another cell phone video captured the moment the woman surrendered to police. After surrendering, she was quickly handcuffed and placed in an ambulance.
